HOLD III Exhibition

This bowl will be available for purchase at the HOLD III open ceramic exhibition opening tomorrow night (Friday 5 April) at the wonderful Belconnen Arts Centre .

Galah in the bushes - 27mm wide x 120mm high - hand polished, hand thrown Southern Ice Porcelain salad bowl with coloured porcelain inserted through the walls and incised inlay outline.

I’m very proud of this bowl in particular and for that reason I submitted it for consideration in the open ceramics exhibition run annually by Belco Arts. Ceramicists are invited from all over Australia to submit entries that “investigate the beauty and sense of intimacy experienced when eating or drinking from an exquisitely crafted plate or vessel”.

Technically this bowl was a real challenge (especially in porcelain). I cut holes for the galah and every one of the leaves while the soft clay bowl was still sitting on the wheel head. I then inserted coloured porcelain into the holes and mended the porcelain back together. It is extremely difficult to do this amount of handling without it cracking or warping at some stage in the process. Additionally, this bowl is made in beautiful Australian Southern Ice Porcelain and survived a firing at high temperatures.

It’s a lot of work but it means you can have so many different views of the bowl design and the Galah really is nestled in the bushes. It is definitely a one-off !

I do hope you get the chance to see all the fabulous ceramic work at this exhibition which runs from 5 April to 19 May.
